FROM Robert Israel in EDGE MAGAZINE:
Let me say this about the 2nd Annual Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival: What a difference a year makes. Sticking to their vision that "this is not your grandmother's Tennessee Williams," the producers embraced the universal and showcased not only Williams' works but the influence of his work on others. The festival proved that Williams' influence is indeed profound and enduring.
And while last year's festival was indeed groundbreaking and breathtaking, the coordination this year was seamless. Volunteers were everywhere, it seemed, to assist and guide and answer questions. The press coordination was superb. Once again, The Commons was the place for the festival buzz and it was staffed with a helpful and knowledgeable crew.
The program was beautifully designed, chock-a-block full of information and full-page advertisements that guarantee the festival's financial future. There were films, outside performances, parties and more. John Guare, who paid homage to Williams in his coffee chat at The Commons, said it best when he proclaimed Williams had the vision to look beyond the "polite kitchen sink reality" of our comfortable worlds ...
David Kaplan calls Williams a shaman. There is truth to that description, although as Americans we aren't comfortable using it to describe our writers or artists. But that's what Tennessee Williams did: He wrote works that helped us heal.
